“Fake news networks”, “Crooked Hillary”, “Must build Wall and secure our borders”, “Governor Jerry ‘Moonbeam’ Brown”, “Failing N.Y. Times”, “drugs (poison) and enemy combatants pouring into our Country” …
The best part of Trump’s tweets is that they are a direct window into his amygdala. The amygdala is that section of the brain that detects fear and prepares for emergency events. It drives fight or flight behavior and lets emotions overtake rational decision making.
But the amygdala is also part of the brain’s reward and pleasure center. This is why it is so much fun to get sucked into Trump’s name calling and insinuations: it provides pleasure.
What doesn’t provide pleasure is serious research that is supposed to underscore policy decisions. Why, for example, pay any attention to studies that shows the fear mongering around “sanctuary cities” has no merit when it is much more fun to claim that sanctuary cities harbor dangerous criminals?
And why get into a debate about access to guns and gun violence when it is much easier to say that any discussion about gun control is a threat to our “freedom”?
Or why bother to even glance at the plethora of evidence of human induced global warming when it is much for fun to say global warming is liberal “fake news”.
So let’s set aside the burden of serious discussions and enjoy America’s Amygdala.
